What to look for

Vacuum only vs. mop comboMop combos with a washing dock save the most effort but cost more and take more floor space.
Obstacle avoidanceCamera-based avoidance matters if you have cords, socks or pets. Check recent tests, not just marketing.
Dock featuresSelf-emptying is now common. Self-washing and drying mops add cost and upkeep.
HeightMeasure under sofas and beds. Low-profile models reach more spots.

What nobody tells you before you buy

Pick the dock spot firstPut the dock on a hard floor against a wall, with roughly 1.5–2 ft clear on each side and more in front (check your manual for exact spacing). It needs an outlet, good Wi-Fi, and, for self-washing docks, room to lift the tanks out. Moving the dock later can confuse the saved map.
Let it map before it cleansOn the first run, use the app's mapping or quick-map mode with doors open and floors picked up. Then name rooms, split or merge them, and set no-go zones before scheduling real cleans.
Multi-floor homesMany models can save maps for more than one floor. Carry the robot upstairs, let it build a new map there, and it will recognize which floor it's on. The dock usually stays on one floor, so cleaning another floor means carrying it and charging or emptying it manually.
What LiDAR meansLiDAR is a spinning laser sensor (often the round bump on top) that measures distances to walls and furniture. It lets the robot build an accurate map and clean in straight rows, even in the dark. It doesn't see small things like socks or cords well, which is what front cameras or other obstacle sensors are for.
App setupHave your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi name and password ready, since many robots don't connect to 5 GHz-only networks. Stand near the robot during pairing and update its firmware when the app offers it.
Sharing with someone else in your homeCheck before you buy. The Roborock app has a Device Sharing option, and the eufy Clean app does too. The person you invite needs their own account and accepts the invitation in their app. Shared users may not get every setting. Some brands don't offer sharing, so the usual fallback is signing in with the owner's account on both phones or using a voice assistant.
Ongoing costsPlan on replacing dust bags (for self-emptying docks), mop pads or rollers, filters, side brushes and main brushes every few months, plus floor-cleaning solution if your dock uses it. Buy the maker's own parts or ones listed as compatible with your exact model.
The mop water tank can start to smellDirty water left in the tank or dock grows bacteria and smells within days. Empty the dirty-water tank after mopping, rinse it, and let it air-dry. Run the dock's mop-drying feature if it has one, and clean the mop tray every week or two.
Pets don't always moveA robot can bump into a sleeping dog or tangle in a tail or fur. Schedule cleans when pets are out of the room or crated, set a no-go zone around beds and bowls, and pick a model with good obstacle avoidance if you have pets. Keep an eye on the first few runs.
Cords are the #1 snagLamp cords, phone chargers and curtain cords can wrap around the brushes. Tidy cords off the floor with clips or covers, or block those areas with no-go zones. Camera-based avoidance helps but isn't perfect.
Hair wraps around the brush and wheelsLong hair winds around the main brush, side-brush shaft and wheel axles. Many models have anti-tangle brushes, but you'll still need to cut hair free now and then. A small seam ripper or the cleaning tool in the box makes it quick.

FAQ

Is now a good time to buy a robot vacuum?

Usually not in October. Holiday sales in late November tend to beat early-fall prices.

Do I need a mop combo?

Only if you have a lot of hard floors. Carpet-heavy homes do fine with a vacuum-only model.

Are last year's models worth it?

Often yes. Top models from the prior year are commonly discounted when new models launch.
